Contemporary Artist Spotlight

Startup Waco exists to be a catalyst for economic growth, breaking down barriers and creating new pathways for all entrepreneurs in Central Texas from idea to scale — and artists are part of this ecosystem.

We are thrilled to support working artists, to further their business growth and professional development through the purchase of their works and ongoing programming developed to support the artist—entrepreneur journey.

Startup Waco worked with local Artist and Curator, Andrea La Valleur-Purvis, to procure the works displayed in our work spaces.

Wendy Michelle Davis, b. 1979, Redwood City, CA

Wendy Michelle Davis grew up in the state of California where she studied art at Cosumnes River College and Cabrillo College.  Her life has led her to reside abroad and in other parts of North America. Texas has been home since 2018, and it’s where Wendy’s roots have firmly planted. She is a full-time artist selling her paintings locally and internationally.

Her work can be described as vibrant and painterly as she seeks to capture the fleeting beauty of life with broad loose brushstrokes. Whether a branch of fruit, a field of flowers, or a scene from travels in old Europe, her art is lively and captivating.

She loves supporting her community and the arts. Seasonally she hosts artist retreats at her home studio set in nature, just outside of Waco, Texas, as well as monthly painting workshops. She is also the Creator of the Austin Avenue Art Fair, a fine art fair the showcases artists and musicians every fall in downtown Waco.

You can see Wendy’s paintings in  galleries in Waco, at the Vineyard Gallery in Florence, Texas, and throughout the year in a number of juried art markets.

Jolee French, b. 2000 City, Texas

I am an artist in Texas creating original and commissioned works of animals and the outdoors with a contemporary energy. I have always been inspired by North American wildlife and the West. As a child, I especially loved to use my crayons to draw horses. Today I still pursue that love through my art, just with different art mediums.

I have been creating and selling art since I was a teen. During high school I sold small acrylic pieces and custom painted shoes. Once I was in college I began selling watercolor pet portraits, tattoo designs, stickers and prints of my original pieces. It wasn’t until after graduating college with a business degree and joining the workforce for a few months that I decided to take my art side-gig and turn it into a full-time career. And now I enjoy creating with oil, watercolor and ink.
